SASH AND FRAME REPAIRS, SILL REPLACEMENTS, RE-CORDING AND BALANCING
If only a small area of the sill or box is rotten then the affected wood can be removed back to sound timber, and then replaced with ‘repair care’, a specialist elastic resin. This can be molded to seamlessly match the original section of the sill and will last almost indefinitely. Due to its elastic nature, it does not crack and break down like cheaper two pack filler that is often used. When a greater section of the box or sill has succumbed to rot or insect damage, then a larger section of timber can be removed and a new section of hardwood or treated softwood can be carefully spliced in as a replacement. Occasionally a whole sill will need to be replaced; for this, we use only high-quality hardwoods, cut to match the original sill, fixed in place and primed with an exterior undercoat. Provided the windows are maintained there is no reason why your new hardwood sill will not last for hundreds of years.
